Cotton is glued to a paper lantern to create a cloud light. Now let us observe the outcome as she turns the lights off! ...

“All hail the mighty Glow Cloud”, or so one would say if they’re a fan of the acclaimed comedy podcast, “Welcome to the Night Vale”.

Today, we’ll be making a DIY cloud that you could hang almost everywhere and makes it look better, whether it is in a baby shower or your room or even your dusty cabinet. How dreamy! While the creation process may seem sophisticated (though not as sophisticated as making a real cloud), it is cheap and fairly easy to make.

What are the tools and materials required for this wonderful project? You’ll need cotton batting (found at craft stores), paper lanterns, a wooden dowel, fishing wire or string, a hot glue gun, and battery-powered LED lights. While some would consider using flameless candles, LED lights are the safest option. We do hope that no one would actually use a normal candle unless they’re not pleased with their adorable cloud.

Let’s get started:

1) Expand the paper lanterns and glue batting to the exterior. You can use whatever size of lanterns you want! It’s all up to you! The video below uses five lanterns of different shapes.

2) Tie the string to the wooden dowel before fastening the dowel to the ceiling with screw hooks in order to secure it nicely.

3) Place clear string on each edge of the lanterns. Then you’d want to tie each ball to the dowel individually in the shape of a cloud, adjusting to your liking.

4) Pull lights through the base through the cloud. Don’t forget to let some hang lower than the others.

5) OPTIONAL: Attach blue ribbons for rainy effect.

This DIY cloud makes an amazing gift, decoration for a hipster’s room or wedding, or would make a fairly cute decoration in your bedroom.

Are you a fan of “Welcome to the Night Vale”?

Here’s a custom touch-up to the original DIY recipe where you create your own Glow Cloud:

1) Instead of using normal paper lanterns with only white lights, you may procure multi-coloured ones from craft stores or online.

2) Cut out an eye shape from a piece of purple paper, draw the pupils with a violet marker (or black marker if you have none) and paste it on your finished cloud.

3) Spray it with vanilla air freshener or perfume to give it extra detail.

While it is not recommended for you to run directly at your Glow Cloud, shrieking and waving your arms just to see what it does, you may hang it up in front of your house to prevent suspicious individuals from getting near your property.
